In 1837, the Chester and Birkenhead Railway opened using a 4 ft 9 in gauge. The Eastern Counties elected for 5 ft as did the London and Blackwall Railway and the the Northern and Eastern Railway. The London and Brighton Railway however chose was 4 ft 9 in as did the Manchester and Birmingham Railway and the Manchester and Leeds Railway.

The Mobile industry should learn from history, and move quickly to adopt a standards based approach without the need for government intervention.
